Is the (Online Business) Party Over?

It’s worth saying… The world of online business has done brilliant things for women especially… starting and scaling businesses, building freedom, giving themselves autonomy and choices. I’m here for all of that.

But what started as a great leveller, has become a little toxic. And so in its current guise, I really bloody hope the party is over.

In today's Wild Edit newsletter I talked about one of the biggest social media trends in recent months - 'Deinfluencing' - where influencers are actively encouraging more conscious consumption.

If you've spent any time in the online space, especially as a woman, you will know what it feels like to be bombarded with unsolicited advice.

From health trends that tell us how to have a better menopause, to being better, looking better, doing better... in business, as a parent, as a feminist, as a partner.

If you're a woman in business, you tick every box of people trying to sell you stuff, so on top of supplements, raw milk and fitness plans, you're probably also getting told on the regular that you're doing everything wrong...

> You don't have an email list, are you a savage?
> Your funnel sucks, do this instead.
> Be visible. All the time. Jump on 'Stories'.
> Sell, sell, sell.
> Do reels, no not like that, like this. No, do Carousells.
> Here's how I film my B-roll, in my aesthetic life. Do it too.
> Watch this masterclass, then this one, it'll give you all the answers.
> Buy this set of templates for £20 and it'll show you how I created £3m. Suresies.

I know that online business isn't exclusively aimed at women, but much of this generic, lowest common denominator advice, is and it's burning us out.

It's time for everyone to quieten the noise.

Get clear on what you're building and why and step away from the tactics.

Know there are millions of ways to build a business, to sell your services, to raise your profile and it doesn't have to include Instagram.

Imagine, the silence to just get on with it.
